Sinopsis:
Narra la historia de Arnold Beckoff (Harvey Fiertein), un drag queen profesional a lo largo de diez años de su vida: desde 1971 hasta 1980. Mostrará su inquietud por encontrar el amor, como cuando su novio bisexual le abandona por una mujer. Luego vendrá Alan (Matthew Broderick), un chapero callejero del cual se enamora. Las cosas parecen irles bien: hacen planes juntos, se trasladan a una casa grande y se plantean adoptar un hijo. Sin embargo, Alan muere trágicamente al intentar salvar a un pobre viejecito al que estaban golpeando en la calle. Otra de las claves de la película es el papel de la madre de Arnold (Anne Bancroft), que rechaza la homosexualidad de su hijo y ha perdido toda esperanza de que regrese al lado hétero de la vida. Arnold tendrá que luchar contra la homofobia de su madre y explicarle con el corazón en la mano su estilo de vida, para lograr -in extremis- un punto de entendimiento con ella.
